The Certificate Course may be taken concurrently with any University undergraduate or postgraduate course, whether followed on a full-time or part-time basis.

This course is open to both University of Malta current students and General Public.

This course will train you as a beginner with no prior knowledge from a different academic background with an interest in Chinese language and culture. You will benefit from the taught and practical components which will allow you to acquire a basic to lower intermediate knowledge of modern Chinese (Mandarin), read and create different types of short and simple texts, participate in simple conversations and become aware of cultural aspects of Chinese, in accordance to the CEFR levels ranging from A1 to A2+ or HSK3 (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi). You will appraise Chinese culture in order to explore it further and develop the necessary communicative competences in peer-group interaction. You will be trained to autonomously construct simple and short coherent texts that will enhance your reading and listening skills.

Requirement for award of Certificate in Language Proficiency (Chinese): 30 ECTS credits

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Certificate in Language Proficiency and the Diploma in Language Proficiency under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts.

By the end of the course, you will be:

Able to use the four language skills in Chinese - speaking, listening, reading and writing - at A2 level in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, or HSK 3;
Equipped with a wide knowledge of vocabulary, characters, grammar, syntax as well as useful stylistic and cultural nuances in Chinese;
Able to apply the acquired knowledge of Chinese in personal and professional contexts;
Able to understand Chinese culture and society;
Follow basic conversations in the target languages on different mediums.

The Certificate in Language Proficiency aims to prepare you with a basic to lower intermediate knowledge of Chinese Mandarin for personal growth and future career plans. Access to further studies are available by transferring to an undergraduate course in Chinese offered by the Faculty of Arts, either at the University of Malta or by foreign institutions abroad, provided that the necessary requirements are met.
